Sacramento, CA. October 20, 2014 -The Sacramento Probation Department’s Break Away Bike Program was selected as one of only 12 county programs throughout California for the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) Challenge Award. Representatives from CSAC will present the award to Probation at the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors Chambers on October 21, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.
The Break Away Bike program was created to assist Adult Drug Court participants who, upon release from custody, have no means of transportation to attend required treatment sessions and Court appearances. Drug Court participants who fail to report can face sanctions and delayed progress within the program. Through the Break Away Bike program, Adult Drug Court participants earn donated bicycles with consecutive negative drug tests and program participation. This addresses transportation issues, incentivizes attendance and sobriety, and reduces barriers to treatment. To date, over 50 clients have earned bicycles. Bicycles for the program are donated by the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol and Cycles for Hope. The Break Away Bike Program has expanded to also include clients at Probation’s Adult Day Reporting Centers.
Interested in donating a bicycle? Please contact Supervising Probation Officer, Michele Vela-Payne at (916) 875-4204.
